Periscope Camera | |||||||||||||||||
How many times has your visibility been obstructed when you were in your car like in a parking lot when you can't see if another car is coming when you are backing out, or in traffic and you are stuck behind a truck. Imagine having a mini video cam built into an antenna that you can control with a 360 degree range. When not in use it retracts like a radio antenna.

Some buses have video cameras in the rear with screens in the front. This is might be valuable for all cars, not just trucks, and help eliminate blind spots.
Why not just put the camera on the end of the existing antenna? This may not work with all current car antenna designs, but that can always be changed.
I've thought about this idea a lot. A simple TFT screen in the sun visor could display the image. The camera view could change according to what the driver is doing, e.g. in reverse, signalling to turn, speed, etc. The technology to build this is not expensive and getting cheaper all the time.
For senior drivers it could be extremely helpful when backing up. I believe many of them rely solely on the mirrors. Yikes!
I don't think the typical driver would think of this solution, or be able to imaging a practical implementation, and consider the suggestion ridiculous. Part of the problem is that most drivers have long experience in simply accepting the whole visibility problem. However, if a really unobtrusive and user-friendly implementation were developed, drivers may wonder how they ever got on without it.
A variation of this idea would be a digital camera with a detachable view screen. There are many events where this might be useful. In a crowd at an event it is difficult to see the event over the crowd. A detachable screen would permit the camera itself to be hoisted on a telescoping pole where the screen and a remote actuator could take the pictures. Also views around the corner where it is dangerous for a human to peek would be possible. This might have military and police applications. A digital camera could also be connected to satellite output for observation by central control.
