vending machine improvement | |||||||||||||||||
have you ever gone to a vending machine and see that it says "exact change only", not because that is how it is designed, or how it is programmed, but because the coin return reservoir is empty, and of course you only have bills. ideally they should sort the coins paid and rather than just having the neatly stacked coins they are loaded with,then they would probably never run out of change, but that could be more complex than feasable, and would only help new machines. I think that they should have an option in this situation to forefeit your change so you can still use the machine. often the change is inconsequential, but even when it is not I know there are occasions that I would be willing to give up $2 for a drink that should only be $1.25. this is a simple programming alteration and could be implemented easily. (This is particularly aggravating for me because I am diabetic, and encountered the problem when my blood-sugar was low and I would have given anything for a soda or a candy bar.)

sounds completely reasonable to me. Of course you'd want a clear statement telling you the fact that you're pushing another button to give up your change. But yeah, sounds okay. Or, it could even leave extra credit on the machine for the next buyer.
This is a really good idea that would also generate extra revenues for the vending machine operating company.
think one way around this problem is that the old machines could be equip with a ticket dispenser that gave you credit for what it owed you. then you could use that ticket at supporting stores to use on another soda kind of like the buy one get one caps.

Some vending machines are now equipped with card readers so you can use a debit or credit card for purchases. I haven't carried coins in years, and it's a nuisance when I have to accept them as change from vending machines (which I seldom use because I don't normally carry coins...) for the folding currency that I sometimes still carry (for emergency use only).
