In each (i.e., left and right) tailight housing, install a small and cheap (web-cam style) camera. Electronically mix the two signals and feed them to a small liquid crystal display (LCD) on the dashboard. The driver would have a reasonably good view of what is behind the car. Because cars today all have lights that turn on when the car is in reverse gear, this system would work in the dark also.

There would be (a) no need for the driver to turn around when backing up slowly, (b) a vast reduction in backward-moving accidents for drivers of all ages, especially those involving small things (bikes, dogs, kids) getting run over, and (c) a even vaster decrease in the number of backward-moving accidents by oldsters.
