Laptop credit card reader | |||||||||||||||||
Even though it's just 16 numbers, plus the expiration date, plus the stupid code on the back that's no longer legible because it's worn off... I still get sick of entering my credit card information whenever I shop on-line. It's also less than wonderfully secure, and typos cause irritating delays. I want the retail store's "swipe your card" functionality built into a PCMCIA card I can install in my laptop computer (with an equivalent add-on for desktops). The accompanying software prompts me for my PIN. When I've clicked those four digits, the software reads my credit card and sends that information to the web page. For vanilla web pages, the text would be inserted into the usual fields (offering no enhanced security). Existing software does this, so it's technically possible. With time, however, there would be ssl-secure behind-the-scenes transmission without any clear-text pasting. Kind of like MSN Passport, without having to turn your life over to Micro$oft. Get Visa/Mastercard on the job and it will happen quickly. The next generation of notebooks will have the slide-your-card slot built in. Not incidentally, the software would maintain records of the transaction, perhaps logging it to a secure web site maintained by Visa/Mastercard. That would help resolve disputes. At tax time, the items could be downloaded into Quicken or Money. Less hassle, fewer mistakes, better security, better record-keeping.
