I have several friends with lives and businesses so complicated that they carry two mobiles with separate lines. Wouldn't life be easier if they had one phone with 2 SIM cards in it? At the flick of a switch they could change between the two. A cheaper and less satisfactory alternative, suitable if say one line is used mainly for outgoing calls (or used infrequently) is just to have a built in storage recess under the cover for a spare SIM, so they could be swapped over.

I believe that a cell phone service based on this concept has already been (or is about to be) launched in Italy. Besides the benefits for business people, it is also ideal for people who lead a second love life !!

I've seen an instance of this concept being used with VERY old-school Nokia phones (Nokia 6100 Series; Made in the late 90's), where you buy an optional battery pack with 2 SIM card slots, then when you close the phone back up, contact terminals will align with the SIM reader of the phone.

This idea may not be practical in America since not all phones made are GSM-Compatible and used without SIM, but through a pre-programmed ESN (Electronic Serial Number) instead.

Mobile phones with two transceiver units and the parallel use of two sim cards in one cellphone would be great. So far, the closest one can get are dual sim adapters (a.k.a. ghost adapters, twin adapters, dual sim covers, etc.). But these will only allow for switching between 2 lines, not for parallel use.

Check out this website dealing with the subject of dual sim adapters from a user's point of view: dual sim adapter, a user's experience

Imho the currently available dual sim adapters are preferable to carrying two phones, but a mobile that would implement the concurrent use of two sim cards would be way better!
