Public waste shredders | |||||||||||||||||
In London there are no wastebins in public places like train stations because the IRA carried on a campaign using bins to deposit bombs (small, easy to carry, no one notices if you dump a bag in a bin) which then killed and maimed innocent passers by. What about a waste bin which operates on the same principle as a document shredder? People could dispose of their litter safely, which solves the problem of the tides of rubbish which build up in public places in London, but would deter anyone who tried to put a bomb in. (Sadly this idea is irrelevant to the threat of suicide bombing.)

I like the idea, but then I immediately wonder how lucrative the "lost a finger in the public shredder" legal industry spawned by this would be for lawyers. It would last a week until the lawyers sued some poor town blind.
Not to mention "what will a shredder do to a home-made, unstable explosive"?
The problem with shredders is that they're only designed to shred paper. What will happen when someone drops a tin can or glass bottle into it?
