Why not make the walls of a home or apartment covered with a grid of smll holes to receive picture hooks or shelf brackets or various special kinds of furniture that could be wall mounted. The standard hole distances could be used by manufacturers to determine matching pins for mounting. This would make easy all the problems that now require stud location for picture hanging, curtain hanging etc. and no longer require the drilling of holes. If the occupant wanted to have a large colored blank space or a wood paneling wall or whatever, large standard panels could be available to merely plug in quickly to change decor. Some special holes could follow an electric or antenna line with a line of holes to plug in various devices for different purposes in chosen spots. This could make a home much more flexible and unwanted paneling could be returned to general storage for other people to use since the plug-ins would be standard. Interior walls could also be added with edge connections for electricity and data.

Novel idea! Could be excellent but would involve overcoming the standard obstacle of achieving sufficient 'buy-in' from enough willing consumers and channels of distribution to warrant commitment to mark it as a bonafide standard. Not impossible but very tough to do.
There's the problem of all those holes allowing mold, bugs, etc. access. And sound transmission would be increased. However, the slat wall systems used in retail could add the flexibility of shelving.I have a friend who put fuzzy fabric wallcovering on the walland velcro on the back of her pictures, (lot's of fun during parties).
It's called "pegboard." Holes are about 1" apart, hooks made to fit into the holes are readily available. Usually found in workshops and garages.
Pegboard is ugly and weak and without relation to the integral electrical elements within the wall. Actually, small holes add to the silencing quality of a surface.
I think this is a useful idea, but along these same lines, I wonder why we don't actually used the space between studs inside the wall for interior walls in the areas where there is no wiring or plumbing.
I've built walls that had sheet-rock on one side only for un-needed areas and later I installed custom narrow shelves. Can work for small books, DVD's, knick-knacks or cabinets.
