Still, it's so annoying when you go to floors nobody needs to go to simply because they pressed the wrong button. What about allowing a de-select only up to three seconds after pressing the button?
Yes, I often wonder why most buttons aren't toggles, so they can be de- or re-selected according to our up-to-the-moment thinking. Let's include the call buttons outside the elevators, so an impatient citizen can cancel the request when he decides to bolt up the stairs.
What happens if one deselects all floors? I guess the system should allow de-selecting a floor only if it's not the only selected, unless the elevator has not moved yet (I enter the elevator, select the top floor, Oops!)
I have a friend who lives in a building with this feature... if you press the button for a floor once, it selects it. Press it again, it de-selects it. Brilliant! Honestly, this is *so* simple to implement it should be featured on *every* elevator everywhere!!
Ha Dgulbran How about when that guy that is going to the top floor gets on and says he is in a hurry and just de-selects all the other floors, kind of like road rage, I don't think this will work in America. Joe in Fl.
joemc11, I think the 3 second delay discussed earlier solves the sorry-more-in-a-hurry-than-you-fellow issue. However, it does not allow other specific use cases, like: "Hey, going back to work? - No I'm heading for the coffee-machine on 6th floor. - Good idea, I cancel my 10th floor and go with you.".
Or "Hey John, I met the boss, he's quite pissed off, you should turn round and go see him right away. - Too bad, I can't cancel my 238th floor!" ;-)
I agree - each button should simply be a toggle. It should also be standard to have maybe a different colored light inside each button for the floors to let you know what floor you are on.
Yeah theire should be-but just for future knowladge on some elevators if you press your floor button and the close door button at the saim time it will go directley to your floor!
i think that whoever invented this kind of elevator buttons is really practical and also a genius.. considering that sometimes kids are playing with it and you cant do something about it. so de-selecting a floor/s could be a great solution for this kind of problem. and to "JOEMC11" ofcourse it will work in america, cant you do something about that guy if ever he does this to you? you can confront that guy and it's just the same with "you going to the top floor and then this one guy pushed all the buttons" right? i say this idea is really a brilliant one. josh c. good idea!.. to remove the irritating habits of the others who's enjoying in annoying others by stopping to every floor of the building because they intentionally press all the buttons… If all elevators have this “deselect button”, you can just press it immediately.
Not only would I like to "deselect" a floor, but I would also like to send an electric shock to the juvenile that thought it would be "oh-so-funny" to select such floors randomly. And, a shock and hefty fine for the parents that created such a genetic problem for the rest of society to deal with.
A nifty trick is to hit your floor number while hitting the door close button. On SOME</U> elevators this will put it in express mode ignoring all other requests.
This opens up an opportunity for obnoxious people to deselect floors of other passengers to get to their floor. A mugger might be able to take you to the basement without stopping at any intermediate floors; creating an opportunity for abuse. I think it is a terrible idea; though superficially it is personally desireable.
Excellent idea. And I have another problem with elevator buttons, as long as we're on the topic. The symbol for "open elevator door," while employing outward facing triangle arrows, actually looks more like a closed door than the symbol for "close elevator door." I've been hitting those buttons for years and years and I still have to pause and think for a second before picking one. (I personally prefer the words "Open" and "Close," but I guess they no longer cut it in our defiantly multilingual society.) Maybe elevator manufacturers or retrofitters should spend a little effort on making all of the buttons a components inside the cars a bit more user friendly.
I have come accross this kind of lift but not often. There I saw a button saying CANCEL. In any case I agree that this button should be everywhere, in every lift of the world. Its not a big deal anyway.
I too have thought this might be a good idea. However, I see one fatal flaw to widespread adoption in public buildings... It's not friendly to blind or even low vision users. Those riders need to be able to count on pushing a braille labeled button, and eventually getting to that floor, without having to worry about either accidently deselecting it, having someone else accidently deselect it, or (hopefully less likely) having someone else deselect it maliciously. If not for this difficulty, I think it'd be a great idea.
Pressed the wrong button? Oh, boo hoo! You made your bed, now lie in it! It's really not worth the extra work from the people who have to build the elevators. If some joker presses all the buttons, just slap him.
How about also having a motion detector at the each floor, so the elevator wont stop if there is no one there. Often times someone will give up waiting and either take the stairs, or take another elevator, or kids will hit the up and down buttons and run.
When alone on elevator before getting off press all the floor buttons and pass the gas, the one you have been holding in for some time from eating that bean dip, egg, beer, and some onions. If not alone cut a SBD and watch fast the people get off even on the wrong floor. Just joking I would never do anything like that.
Bravo! Especially on all newer 'electronic' styled elevators.. I don't know how often I have got on an elevator that some kid has pushed all of the buttons!
i think in modern elevators, this feature is already installed. when the wrong floor is selected, just hold down that wrong floor button to deselect it. I have tried it in some new elevators but am not sure how recent the feature came to being.

I'm quite mischeivous and can imagine all sorts of fun I could have deselecting someones floor when they arent looking.

yes. We have such elevator here (Taiwan). For commercial building, it's very useful!
What happens if one deselects all floors? I guess the system should allow de-selecting a floor only if it's not the only selected, unless the elevator has not moved yet (I enter the elevator, select the top floor, Oops!)
Definitely a good idea! And,lacouture, if you did press the wrong floor you could just select the proper floor-quick! and then deselect the top floor.
Simply a good idea.
I can even answer the question "what should the elevator do if all floors are unselected?" - Simple, stop at the next floor.

This is possible, i suggested it in my building years ago and they did it. It was just a reset button. Very useful when children pressed all buttons.

It is a cool feature. We have OTIS lifts at work and you can deselect a floor by pressing the number button twice (double click).
I too have thought this might be a good idea. However, I see one fatal flaw to widespread adoption in public buildings... It's not friendly to blind or even low vision users. totally agree great idea, i always get stuck with the kid who pushes all the buttons.... it would be a nice feature.
This exists at some of the elevators in Dubai. You press the same button again to deselect.
I would agree, but only if a video shot would show that no one was waiting on the targeted floor.
Mitsubishi makes elevators with this feature, you hold the button briefly to cancel a floor.
take the stairs, then it doesnt matter what floor the thing wants to go to

Gr8 idea.I'm thinking hitting 'Lift+buttons+shortcuts' in google and practising it with my buildings life.
