Modern, computer controllet CVTs improves mileage even more.
same goes for hybrid gas/electric cars like Toyota Prius. And these are by definition "automatic" one pedal for go, one pedal to stop. The simple combustion engine manual/auto debate is lagging the available technology.
A better alternative may be to cycle, walk for short journies, use teh phone, or internet, etc. rather than the car. saves much more fuel!
