I'd love a TV manufacturer to give me a constant volume option. Too many times I am watching TV late at night and attempting to keep the sound down as not to wake the rest of the house up, I am forever moving the sound down during action scenes and moving the volume up during dramatic whisper scenes. (Why do they always whisper ?) Anyway I would love if I could hit a button that allowed me to keep the volume coming from the TV at a setting I could choose. So every explosion and whisper were equal coming out of the speakers.

I love that idea. Also it would help when the commercials come on, which always seem to be louder than the show, and getting louder. Ironically, it just makes me want to change the channel or turn off the sound entirely.

Great idea. About 5 years ago, Magnavox advertized that they had a similar feature. I don't think it would increase the volume for quiet scenes, but it would lower the volume for commercials. I don't know what happened to this feature since TVs today have every bell and whistle except constant volume. If they had this feature I wouldn't wear out the "mute" button.

Actually, the concept of a "constant volume" TV has been around for many years. I recall back in the 1960's there was a build-it-yourself add-on circuit described in an article in one of the electronic hobbyist magazines. It required some minor electrical additions and changes to the TV speaker connections. It is, of course, not advisable for inexperienced people to be opening up and modifying their TV's due to the serious shock hazard.

Maybe we don't see this function on new TV's because of pressure from advertisers to convince manufacturers not to design it into their new sets. The advertizers want ear-splitting volume when their commercials are being aired!

it already exists...Phillips TVs in Europe have it...equalizing volumne...suppose its not available in the US, even on the Phillips TVs due to the large lobby of the Advertisers... :-) chers.

This is yesterday's news. My TV (Philips, bought in USA) has it. It's called AVL. Imagine Dr. Evil making quote marks with his hands saying "Automatic Volume Leveler".
