Video cameras are currently both a camera and a VCR.I want the camera part to be seperate and connect to the recorder / playback and battery pack with a lightweight cable.Separating the camera would make it lighter, thus easier to hold at arms length for hours, and make it possible to replace the VCR with (say) a hard drive based VCR when those become available.

This was how all camcorders were until about 1987. There was a camera portion that one held in their hand as they do the full unit now. Then there was a recording device, like a vcr (and just about as heavy) that one strapped around their shoulder and connected to the camera. This system was almost universally replaced to the combined unit in the late 80's. Then the system was compressed to the smaller units (compact vhs and 8mm) in the early 90's. Camcorders now are about as small as one can get and still be held by the average person. Separated units are actually made currently, but are mostly used for undercover work (I think you could actually buy one at a surveillance site or security store). There is a very small camera attached to a persons clothing or perhaps set inside a small hole in a duffle bag, so that journalists or police can go under cover. A small wire carries info back to a small recording device which is concealed in a slightly larger compartment...could even be a pocket.

They are small enough now, there is no need for separates.
