Why not have pull out cup holders in the arm rests with holes in them for glasses and cups...thus avoiding the wet seats and pants and skirts that happen when the flight attendant bumps your cup off that slick tray or your seatmate gets out and thinks their rear is smaller than it really is and knocks over your coffee. Also we would pick up valuable space in the seat because that bulky tray table would be up not down.

Air France is the one airline that gets it in this regard. They have two options, both of which work quite well. The first is that the tray table has a small cutout so that the cup fits in the well and doesn't fall or slide. And their second innovation is a small ring that flps out from the back of the tray table in which you can place your cup. Thus you have a holder for the cup without having to have the tray table down.

There is already a lack of room in the seats. If the armrests were taken up with drinks, sitting could be even less comfortable.
