I just noticed this idea and it connects to an idea I had recently. What if the center brake light actually showed the speed of the car in numbers? So, instead of just a plain light, it would read "65" or whatever. This way, drivers would be able to get a better sense of the speed of traffic around them. When the driver hits the brake, the numbers decrease to the new speed number. And we could combine it with the strobe idea if the deceleration was very rapid to warn drivers behind.
It would also have the benefit of helping police enforce speed limits, although it would be a problem for those of us with a lead foot. Not only would this be a safety feature, but it would facilitate better driving, including making it easier to change lanes on highways and passing other drivers.

And while I'm looking down at my dashboard to compare my speed to the driver's in front of me I can just go ahead and slam into him. ;)
I think the general concept is not bad, at all. However, I think an incremental improvement would be to have a small doppler radar in your car displaying the speed of the car ahead through a heads-up display on your windshield. A few technical issues to overcome with the doppler, but nothing too serious.
Is it possible for an infrared beam to do this same measurement of the vehicle in front, so if we have countermeasures to interfere with police radar it won't negate this beneficial device?
If IDIOTS stayed off their cell phones--yes I'm talking to you-- the brake lights we have are more than enough--OH forgot the ones that put makup on, turn head to talk to passanger, read papers/maps, and all the other stuff IDIOTS DO instead of watching where you should be WATCHING THE ROAD AND EVERYTHING ON IT.
thats a great idea... You should patent it.
how many times have you heard that from someone you told it to???? That is because no one has had the balls to tell you how much it sucks as an idea. Lets give people more stuff to look at other than concentrating on driving... Lets also provide more information to the cops to give me tickets and slow down trafic because some moron who probably thought your skin would rip from your face if you did a hundred... How a about we project TV shows and comercials on the bumpers of cars too... but only if you pay for a subscription... Yea thats a great idea... you should patent it.
why doenst your 3rd brake light have a picture of a naked lady, or say bad words or something that catches everyones attention? why not have some kind of telepathic hypogeneric influx of duchery that sends messages to everyone in the world that says, " oh, better watch out, joe is slowing down a bit faster than you might think."
why not just pay attention. ive been driving for years and have NEVER been in any kind of accident. not because the guy in front of me doesnt have progressively brightening brake lights, but because i pay attention to shit happening around me, not on your new ringtone or happy meal
