Distance Indicator Lights | |||||||||||||||||
A good deal of accidents happen because people don't keep their distance from cars driving ahead of them. Some cars already have distance sensors to ease parking. Why not extend their range and connect them to some indicator lights at the back of the car. If the car following me came too close, the lights on my car would light up to show the other driver that he should back up a bit. The calculation should include current speed data to distinguish between the distance necessary on a highway and downtown. I think the simple indication would prompt many drivers to slow down a little.

I think a more workable solution would be to have a number on your dashboad show up indicating the distance to the next car. It could change color based on if it's in the "safe" zone or deemed too close, acording to speed, condictions, etc.
I think we also need a readout screen on the rear of the car so we can input actual messages, like "riding my butt only makes me drive slower!" ;)
I have heard that the auto makers are starting to make smart crusie controls that will sence how fast the car is infront of you and if they are going slower your car will adjust automadic to slow you down. Why not use the same thing in a car the will auto slow you down when your too close.Glen
