I've just installed a home theater system, and the hookup location makes little sense. All cables plug into the middle back of the TV & the cables are barely long enough to reach. If anything is added to or changed on the system, I have to unplug every component and pull the TV out to gain access.
The plugs should all be on the side of the TV where the components are going to be. Furniture units or built-ins would then have an access panel to the TV on the side of the unit. No more unplugging components or moving the TV.
Manufacturers might have to put plugs on each side of the TV or make a module with all hookups that could be mounted on either side.
Big screen projection sets could get by with one set of plugs in the front behind the speaker cover, which would also cover cables run from the components on the side.
