Gas stations should try to build up loyalty for customers of their commodity product the way airlines do. Make every fortieth gallon free. They can have their database keep track of how many gallons were purchased on each credit card. After 200 gallons you get a free oil change. You can also get a free oil change after only 100 gallons of full service gasoline.

My brother has a loyalty card for the chain he frequents.I think he gets stuff like wahser fluid and car accessories.

Another chain in Canada actually issues their own "money",which can be used for gas or store purchases. If you buy storeproduct, you get a coupon to get more than the normal issue of"money" (with a minimum gas purchase), and if you buy gas, you get a coupon for certian store products.
