Instead of a "Do Not Email" or "Do not Call" registry, imagine if there was a registry where you could go and list information about yourself and how much money someone would have to pay you to access that info and target you. So for example, you might part with your personal phone number for about $5 if you wouldnt mind getting interupted during dinner for a phone call if you got $5. You might charge more for disclosing your weight, income level, etc and perhaps less for country, state and zipcode.
The idea is that you'd only get junk mail or spam from highly targeted (thus relevant) offers and they would generate a ker-ching in your bank acct for you.

There is indeed such a business: www.docalllist.com.
I just had a quick look at that website. It looks as though you only get paid it you actually participate in the promotion - e.g. sit through the phone call.
I'd prefer it to be non-commital - e.g. you don't have to read the advert that comes through the door if you don't want to.
Hopefully, the advertisers would still participate as they would have very specific marketing information to use.
How about "You've got SPAM!" for AOL! It would be in a separate box and you could get free services and bank deposits every time you read it or finish watching an ad.Or you could delete it all.
Or get a pay-to-call-me number and give it out to anyone who asks for it. If you can't , you can deduct $5 from your phone bill for adverts because GUESS WHAT... the phone company controls telemarketing! (registry is just smoke up your butt) (they deny it but it's true). If you can't deduct ads from your phone bill it's because they somehow got you by the b*lls. Otherwise they get the message. If they disconnect you, they lose a customer, and you can get another phone co and even keep your phone number! This is true in the USA.
If you're a spammer, go fly a kite in the rain!
I think one may need a neutral third party – a machine in this case (an Internet server) – with very clever logic built into it that will empower the consumer (you decide what information to release), protect the public’s identity before, during and after the contact or sale, prevent telemarketers from reselling your demographic data, and still bring about material gain for the customer and the telemarketer and enhancing public privacy.
The website indicated by Barry Nalebuff is quite different from the idea proposed.Under the idea proposed, the consumer gets the money just for listening to the advertizement. With docalllist.com, the consumer gets the money ONLY if the he/she accept the trade proposed in the advertizement.Source http://www.docalllist.com/faq.htmlQ: What if I don't complete a trade?A: Nothing will happen. You will not be credited the Offer Amount.
I am totally for that idea
