Manhattan has countless museums, none of which to my knowledge are open at night. Museums are the perfect second date, since every ten feet you are presented with a new topic of conversation. Unfortunately they all close before you get out from work. If there would be one museum open at night, preferably with new exhibit every month, it would lure a lot of visitors and with them more donations.

And if they loosen up a bit and serve light drinks and refreshments…

There is already at least one night museum in New York City, with all you describe and more, though to reach it you will have to be willing to cross the East river into Brooklyn. Its an event they hold the first Saturday of every month at the Brooklyn Museum of Art. Its really something. There's music and dancing (always preceded by dancing lessons in a particuar style), cinema, gallery tours, activities, basically everything you could want, all well executed. It is free (except for the food and drinks) and attracts some families and many young people (many of whom would probably not otherwise be exposed to museums.) Its open until about 11.

Most of the major museums are open till 8-9ish on Fridays, though most don't provide drinks unless it's a special exhibition/opening. It would be great if they stayed open till at least midnight - seems odd that none of them do.

I don't live in New York, but I agree: Some museums should be open until at least 10:00 on one weekday night. Being open till 9:00 doesn't allow you enough time to get out of work, go out to supper, and still do justice to a museum. And going on a weekend is a hassle if you live far out of town. It's much easier to go on a weekday, when you are already in town.

They do this where I live.

Every few months they have a "Museum night". All the museums are open until late, and they provide a free shuttle busses to get you from one to another.

I like your idea. Having longer hours means that more people can participate. My parents went to a museum for their first date.
