A cell phone with detatchable call unit would be useful. The detatchable unit could be activated by whatever sensor the call unit was modified to use. A sound sensor could be placed near a baby crib for sensing and calling when the baby cries or a heat sensor could be placed like a fire alarm system or an alarm system could be connected to medical devices in a hospital so that a roving nurse could quickly respond to a patient in trouble. Multiple units could be identified with several patients in a hospital system and the readout on the phone could identify which patient is in trouble. These hospital devices could be keyed to medical sensors attached to the patient to indicate what difficulty was present. Sound sensors could be useful in police and military work and the remote sensors might also be capable of accessing and activating pre-placed cameras for surveillance purposes.

This exists now via a paging device. For most applications, a page message would seem to be enough.
I dont understand why anyone would still use pager, or paging service when SMS or MMS is more versitile, faster, safer, bla,, bla,,, bla.. Only americans use pagers. And the rest of the world uses ShortMessageService. For example Croatia, almost third world country sent last month 180 milion SMS messages (it has little more than 4 milion people).
