Being overweight is a much publicised problem these days. A bathroom scale into which the physical characteristics of each member of the family can be entered and then measured against the preferred norms in regard to optimum weight could be entered into the scale so that each member of the family could push an assigned button before stepping on the scale and then a series of lights, green, yellow, orange, red could light up indicating whether the user should consider weight adjustment - plus, of course, the actual weight, perhaps compared to the optimum weight.

No no no no no no no. The scale give you a unbiased view of your amount of mass. Already that's more than most people can handle.
Even though I think it's not a bad idea, other factors should also be considered when comparing your weight to the "optimum". If you don't consider all those factors (genetic, physiological, etc.) you will become more frustrated than you currently are if you never get to such ideal weight.
I propose having a scale with a "historic" record over the last X months or even years so you can effectively track down your trend of weight gain/loss.
