Most "reality" tv is full of good looking rich people giving each other money. Since these shows inevitably give someone tons of money, why not have a show that can really change a person's life, or better yet, have the premise of the show benefit society?

* Have underprivileged contestants complete to see who can benefit a non-profit organization the most

* Have people on welfare compete to see who can keep a job longest.

* Have people in a substance abuse clinic compete to see who can stay clean the longest.

* Have prisoners compete on tasks that contribute to society.

* Have a competition for corporations to see which can utilize volunteers (skilled unemployed?) to maximum benefit - both the businesses and volunteers win prizes.

* Have a prize for people posting the best idea that comes to fruition on whynot.net!!

While these specific premises may be good or bad, certainly the overall idea of reality programming geared toward the benefit of society and for contestants who are not currently gainfully employed or possess above average in attractiveness (I know this means rating may suffer) needs to be considered.

I like the idea of the prize for a idea coming to fruition from whynot.net. Aside from that the stakes just aren't that high in the shows mentioned. It might fill a time slot on a cable channel, but I don't quite see a primetime hit with these shows. I agree that some of those reality shows, and reality contest show are unreal. I would think that it is possible to make one show that has all of those themes. A show based on one or two probably wouldn't command the best ratings, since they are somewhat specialized. A rags to riches story would be more interesting I think.
