Why not develop a wireless connection for the door bell that will allow one to download mp3 tunes to be played instead of the regular old door bell chimes? Ring my door bell at Christmas and hear "White Christmas". Ring my door bell after the Rose Bowl and hear the USC fight song....Sorry had to throw that in there...

Oh and of course you'll use "legally" downloaded mp3s and no the entire song won't play when someone rings the doorbell the door bell will edit the song to 2 or 3 seconds or a number of notes or whatever..

Why not get rid of that whole doorbell! Use your mobile to call the people your visiting just seconds before you will ring their doorbell and both of you will arrive at the door at the same time! Saves time for both of you!

Simple, have something not unlike Solid State MP3 players now, you replace your chime unit with. To change the tune, you re-program a memory card.

Has anyone found one of these yet? Preferrably with Wifi built in?

I am remodeling, and I want to avoid building one myself out of an old iPod...

I came across a similar item at bcsideas. I don't know if this is too late.

I believe X10 has a related product. See Wireless Doorbell The pushbutton sends a signal to the computer. From there you can trigger mp3's to play on remote speakers.

I actually made one of these a few years ago. I just bastardized a cheap $12 doorbell from Home Depot. I used a circuit board I designed from another project for the MP3 playback and amplification for the small 2W speaker. I have it playing about 8 seconds from each of the clips I loaded onto it via docked thumb drive! Everyone that comes over wants me to build them one... maybe there is a place for this afterall. -SyBo

"Knock knock knockin' on heaven's door"... yeah this could get annoying fas.

maybe a customized ring for each kind of visitor?

push once for family = mp3 1

push twice for business = mp3 2

push 3x for expected visitor/date/ride's here = mp3 #3

I've had that for years.Just get a voice recorder gadget and wire the play button to the doorbell button, and the teeny speaker to any old amp. Then push the record button, and the music police don't care what happens next!

Because those voice memo gadgets are not digital, AND you can play your tunes in your own house.

Actually we sell a number of recordable door chimes and doorbells on our website. We have wireless versions, and soon will release our hard-wired mp3 doorchime systems. The currently available wireless versions have input jacks to record to from a computer or ipod, as well as a built in microphone. Visit www.doorbellexpressions.com to check them out!

ringtones are .midi and some other format. there should just be a card reader on the doorbell for an sd card filled with your ring tones. sites like myxertones dot com allow you to make tones from your mp3's. Forget what i just said and just use an SD reader for mp3's. lol
