I\\'ve heard the following idea come up in meetings:
The city could purchase property in suburban areas as it comes up for sale. These could be used to create rights-of-way which would allow more direct bicycle routes.
Specificially, planners could pre-designate the properties they would be interested in for creating bicycle paths. They could put a mechanism in place to make sure that the city is notified when those properties become available.
